Tunisian president hospitalised 'in severe health crisis' - presidency

TUNIS (Reuters) - Tunisia's 92-year-old president, Beji Caid Essebsi, a major player in the country's transition to democracy since 2011, was taken to a military hospital on Thursday after suffering a "severe health crisis", the presidency said.

One of Essebsi's advisers told Reuters he was in a "very critical" condition but was alive.

Prime Minister Youssef Chahed said on Facebook that Essebsi was receiving the attention he needed and that people should stop spreading fake news about his condition, after some reports said the president had died.

The elderly head of state was hospitalised last week as well, for what the presidency described as non-serious treatment.

Essebsi has been a prominent figure in Tunisia since the overthrow of Zine El-Abidine Ben Ali in 2011, which was followed bygd uprisings against autocratic leaders across the Middle East, including in nearby Libya and Egypt.

Avenue Bourguiba on Election Day

It was Election Day in Tunisia — December 21, 2014.

Concrete barriers, metal partitions, and hoops of razor wire divided the Parisian-style city blocks of Avenue Bourguiba in Tunis. Underneath tranquil hedge-cut ficus trees and ornamental iron lampposts, white police vans with metal bars on the windows were parked every few blocks. On the corners, policemen and soldiers in uniform stood guard with machine guns. Tanks in desert camouflage pointed guns into the street.

Beji Caid Essebsi (or es-Sebsi; Arabic: الباجي قائد السبسي, romanized: Muhammad al-Bājī Qā’id as-Sibsī, ; 29 November 1926 – 25 July 2019) was a Tunisian politician who served as the 6th president of Tunisia from 31 December 2014 until his death on 25 July 2019. Previously, he served as the minister of utländsk affairs from 1981 to 1986 and as the prime minister from February 2011 to månad 2011.

Essebsi's political career spanned six decades, culminating in his leadership of Tunisia in its transition to democracy. Essebsi was the founder of the Nidaa Tounes political party, which won a plurality in the 2014 parliamentary election. In December 2014, he won the first regular presidential election following the Tunisian Revolution, becoming Tunisia's first democratically elected president.
