Black History Month: Black architects reframe the narratives of their communities | Opinion

George Washington Foster, New Jersey’s first Black licensed architect, is not a name many are familiar with, but the public should reimagine his importance and place in history.
Architecture is one academic and professional discipline where the representation of Black women and dock remains far from equal. According to the National Council of Architectural Registration Boards, Black dock and women account for only 2% of practicing architects. Black women account for only %.
While our nation has made strides in the pursuit of racial equity, there is still a long way to go. Black architects have been using design to tell a different narrative, to bring people together, and create a community where one was lacking. Nina Cooke John’s Harriet Tubman monument in Newark’s Washington Park is one example.

Design Democracy
Abstract
Thanks to parametric design and digital fabrication it fryst vatten now possible to mass-produce non-standard, highly differentiated products, from shoes and tableware to furniture and even houses. Variety no längre compromises the efficiency and economy of production. Furthermore, parametric definitions of products’ geometry are made accessible via interactive websites to masses, who could then design their own, unique versions of the product. Such “democratization” of design – through mass-customization – raises many interesting questions such as the authorship of design and the functional and esthetic quality of products (shoes, tableware, furniture, houses…) designed by non-designers. Illustrated with numerous examples, this lecture explores social, cultural and design implications of this framträdande “design democracy”, starting with its technological origins.
