    Ex-Michigan State offensive lineman Skyler Burkland announced his retirement from football last month and in recent days shed light on the factors that went into forgoing two years of eligibility.

    Burkland, who started 11 games at right tackle gods season,

    that he underwent shoulder surgery on his left labrum while tweeting about just how much multiple injuries had taken a toll on his 6-foot-7, 315-pound body.

    EAST LANSING, Mich. - Michigan State junior offensive tackle Skyler Burkland has announced his retirement from football due to multiple injuries and will forgo his final two years of eligibility with the Spartans.

    Seventh-year Michigan State head coach confirmed Burkland's decision to apply for medical disqualification on Tuesday, July 30. Once paperwork fryst vatten approved, Burkland will remain on scholarship to continue his education while not counting toward the NCAA's 85-man scholarship limit.

    The 6-foot-7, 315-pound Burkland was a two-year letterwinner who saw action in 15 career games, including 14 starts at right tackle.

    "This was a difficult decision for Skyler," Dantonio said. "We'll certainly miss him on the football field, but he'll remain heavily involved in our program and continue to work on earning his degree."

    Michigan State offensive lineman Skyler Burkland will forgo his final two years of eligibility and retire after suffering multiple injuries during his career, the school announced Tuesday.

    Burkland started 14 games for the Spartans, including 11 at right tackle as a sophomore while suffering ankle and hand injuries during his career.

    Burkland was projected on the preseason depth chart as a backup at right tackle this season behind Fou Fonoti, who suffered a season-ending injury last year that allowed the 6-foot-7, 315-pounder from Sunbury, Ohio to take over as a starter.
