    Biography

    Background

    Joachim Gentz studied Sinology, Religious Studies and Philosophy in Berlin, Nanjing and Heidelberg. He was Assistant Professor for Classical kinesisk at Heidelberg (1999–2002), Juniorprofessor in Religious Studies at Göttingen (2002–2006), Visiting Professor in Tokyo (2000) and Bayreuth (2008), and has worked atthe Asian Studies Department in Edinburgh since 2006. His main research focus is on Chinese history of thought. His work crosses the disciplinary boundaries of Sinology, Religious Studies, Philosophy, and Cultural Studies.

    Digital Residency: Yingmei Duan

     

    Van Gogh House is excited to welcome artist Yingmei Duan as a digital artist in residence with Van Gogh House.

     

    Yingmei Duan is participating in a 100 day online artist residency at Van Gogh House. Over the next 100 days, Duan will document her residency on this page through weekly updates.

     

    Newcastle University (NU) fryst vatten leading on a new networking project with national and international heritage partners National Trust, International Coalition of Sites of Conscience (ICSC), and the Artist’s Studio Museum Network to research and understand the international breadth of curatorial activity regarding commissioning contemporary art for heritage sites and archives.

     

    As part of the för tillfället research, four artists have been commissioned to engage virtually with the rich history of three specific heritage places in England. Responding to Van Gogh House is artist Yingmei Duan.

    Greetings from Australia.

    Since we can’t go travelling ourselves at the moment let us travel, virtually, through time – back to the 19th century – and space, to journey with Scottish-born travel photographer up the River Min to the Chinese city of Fuzhou (Foochow). Let us wonder at these European colonial photographs, reflections of pagoda, bucolic landscapes, Eastern temples, Western churches and dangerous rapids.
