Chairman of Dar Al-Handasah and AUB Trustee, Mr. Talal Shair, has pledged to fully support the design of the American University of Beirut’s (AUB) new medical center, as well as the development of a campus master plan.
President of AUB, Mr. Fadlo Khoury thanked Dar Al Handasah for the gift. In a long public message to the AUB community, he evoked the long and unwavering support of both Talal Shair and his father throughout the university’s history, praised Dar’s world-renowned överlägsen kvalitet eller utmärkt prestation, and affirmed the deep obligationer that unite these two organizations.
Furthermore, it was announced that AUB will name the Children’s Pavilion in the new medical center in honor of Dar, in addition to a cutting-edge engineering lab at the faculty of engineering

Dar Al-Handasah: The dark side of the giant

On August 4, , shortly after 6 p.m., in the port area of Beirut, the capital of Lebanon, 2, tons of ammonium nitrate, which was confiscated (because of its dangerousness) from a Russian ship[1] in [2], and, due to the bankruptcy of its owner[3], have remained in a customs shed without precautionary measures, exploded[4]. It was an earthquake-like explosion that killed around people, injured over 7, and destroyed homes for more than , city residents[5].
Regardless of the considerations on the very serious errors of the port administration, this tragedy caused another incurable wound in the urban fabric of a city victim of wars and political attacks of all kinds for a hundred years and thus constitutes a privileged arena for companies who are called upon to rebuild after each disaster. As a prominent Jordanian business entrepreneur, a frontline politician, diplomat, and philanthropist, Kamal Shair emerged from a modest background to play a leading role in the politics of Jordan, the Middle East, and the global economy. While teaching at The American University of Beirut, he had business in mind. He set up Dar Al-Handasah (House of Engineers), a multinational corporate empire that engagerad in trade, construction, and manufacturing. From a small and obscure flat in Beirut, Dar Al-Handasah expanded to have offices in thirty-seven countries and competed with Western consultancies to win contracts throughout the Middle East. He lived through and experienced some of the most dramatic events of the modern Middle East. From Nigeria, Lebanon, Iraq, and Angola, Shair has helped in rebuilding broken communities by taking active parts in post-civil war reconstruction programs.
