'Jersey Shore' returns: The cult of personality?
The stars of "Jersey Shore" are not only tanned to a crisp, but -- like it or lump it -- also safely baked into the fruitcake that is pop culture. As the MTV show has aged, tonight entering its fifth season, it's hard to deny its impact. Especially in realms outside "Jerzday," what "Shore" fans have dubbed Thursday nights on Twitter.
Cast members have their own tanning products, perfume, apparel, liquor, a record deal, even a boxing team. (Along with a lot of other things, that last one belongs to Nicole "Snooki" Polizzi.) In addition to their usual appearances at clubs, bookstores and more clubs, they've been special guests at halls of learning -- actual universities.
What inspired this vaunted status of reality stars who are oft derided as mere stereotypes, advertisements for bad behavior? More than cast members, they're characters.

The 'Jersey Shore' Cast Didn't Invent 'GTL' After All
Aside from the cast themselves, no one knows the ins and outs of the Jersey Shore quite like SallyAnn Salsano. The Long Island native owns Productions, the production company responsible for all six seasons of the hit MTV reality show, and the upcoming special, Jersey Shore: Family Vacation. We chatted with Salsano ahead of the premiere about some of the madness behind Family Vacation, including the return of Angelina, Sammi Sweetheart’s decision not to join, and the real origin story behind one of the most legendary catchphrases to come out of Jersey Shore.
