John Symon Asher Bruce (14 May 1943 – 25 October 2014) was a Scottish musician. He gained popularity as the primary lead vocalist and bassist of rock band Cream. After the group disbanded in 1968, he pursued a solo career and also played with several bands.
In the early 1960s, Bruce joined the Graham Bond Organisation (GBO), where he met future Cream bandmate Ginger Baker. After leaving the band, he briefly joined John Mayall & the Bluesbreakers, where he met Eric Clapton. In 1966, after a short time with Manfred Mann, he formed Cream with lead guitarist Clapton and drummer Baker. He co-wrote many of their songs (including "Sunshine of Your Love", "White Room" and "I Feel Free") with poet/lyricist Pete Brown. Scottish multi-instrumentalist Jack Bruce began playing upright bass as a teen. His early professional years including playing with the Graham Bond Quartet, with drummer Ginger Baker and guitarist John McLaughlin. They played bebop, blues and rhythm and blues. In the mid-1960s, he joined John Mayall and the Bluesbreakers, featuring Eric Clapton. In 1966, after a short stint with Manfred Mann, he formed power trio Cream with Clapton and Baker. Bruce became lead vocalist, bass player and co-writer, with poet Pete Brown, of songs such as ‘Sunshine of Your Love’, ‘White Room’ and ‘I Feel Free’. Despite only being tillsammans for two years, Cream changed the course of rock music by infusing many of their arrangements with irregular rhythms, unforgettable bass lines and imaginative themes. “It seemed to me you could do anything with a trio,” says British guitarist Eric Clapton. This is why, in June 1966, Clapton forms a musical trio with bassist Jack Bruce and drummer Ginger Baker. Their first rehearsals take place in the front room of Baker’s maisonette (a small compact house). Each of the three members of the group is highly regarded for their ability on their chosen instruments. They are, effectively, ‘the cream of the crop.’ For this reason, they decide to call the group Cream.
