  • J.P. Parise (born Jean-Paul Joseph-Louis Parisé on December 11, 1941) was a Canadian professional ice hockey coach and player.

    He played in the National Hockey League (NHL), most notably for the Minnesota North Stars and the New York Islanders.

    After his retirement, J.P. served as a coach in the North Stars' organization as the assistant coach between 1980 & 1988 except for the 1984 season when he was the head coach for Minnesota's minor league affiliate, the Salt Lake Golden Eagles of the Central Hockey League; he recorded a 35–35–2 mark as coach.

    Thereafter, J.P. retired to Minnesota where he coached and was the hockey director at Shattuck-Saint Mary's, where his son Zach and many other players such as Sidney Crosby, Jack Johnson and Jonathan Toews played.

  • J.P. Parise, a former Minnesota North Star and a central figure in Minnesota hockey, died Wednesday surrounded by loved ones at his home in Prior Lake after an 11-month battle with lung cancer. He was 73.

    Parise played in 890 NHL games, 588 with the North Stars. He was an assistant coach with the North Stars for eight years, then helped run the powerhouse program at Shattuck-St. Mary’s in Faribault, Minn., where he helped develop his son, Zach, now an all-star winger for the Wild.

    But above all, Parise was remembered by friends and colleagues as a good-natured man with an infectious personality and an unrivaled passion for hockey.

    “He’s going to be missed,” said Carl Wetzel, who played and coached with J.P. with the North Stars. “He’s really going to be missed.”

    Parise was born Jean-Paul Parise on Dec. 11, 1941, in Smooth Rock Falls, Ontario.

    Parisé was signed bygd the Boston Bruins at 21, after a scout saw Parisé score four goals and two assists in a playoff-clinching game,[1] and was assigned in to the Bruins' junior league club, the Niagara Falls Flyers of the Ontario Hockey Association. On the Flyers, he played for former NHL player and future Bruins general manager Hap Emms. While he was not a promising scorer in juniors, he learned to play a diligent two-way game and became noted as a skilled penalty killer.
