A scan of the complete 4th issue of Amiri Baraka (then LeRoi Jones/Imamu Ameer Baraka), Larry Neal & A.B. Spellman’s “The Cricket,” published in “New Ark” New Jersey in 1969. The Cricket always makes for fascinating reading, especially for anyone interested in the Black Arts movement, Sun Ra, astro-black ancient futurism, or just completely alternate modes of art and music criticism. But this issue is particularly notable because it contains Albert Ayler’s letter “To Mr. Jones – I had a Vision” describing an apocalyptically intense UFO sighting/religious revelation Ayler and his brother had one night in New Jersey: “It was at night that I had this vision,” he writes, “In this vision there was a large object flying around with bright colors in disc form. When Tania Schmieder contacted me with a note of appreciation for ‘the awakened eye’ website there was no mention of her wishing to be included on the site. But she had left a cybertrail; I followed it to her paintings, which in turn delivered me to an uncommon depth of silence. She had come upon the site while seeking out the writing of Frederick Franck, and said that his books had been a great inspiration for her. Readers here know that Franck was a profoundly important teacher for me; the site takes its name from his 1979 book, The Awakened Eye. It was clear that Tania’s work would be a perfect passform for the artisans’ gallery. An invitation was offered, et voila!

Channa Horwitz grew up in California during the 1940s: she was the daughter of an electrician and inventor, and she studied painting at CalArts when the messy and impulsive painting style of Pollock had moved out of the realms of avant-garde and become the art-school status quo.

Encouraged by her teacher to spontaneously splatter the canvas with dollops of paint, Horwitz instinctively rebelled, deciding that restriction and a focussed constraint was what she needed to push her imagination to its limits.
