         Born in Venice in 1955, Laura de Santillana studied classics and architecture before moving to New York City, where she worked with the Vignelli Associates studio whilst attending the School of Visual Arts. De Santillana went on to design art books and began designing objects and lamps for the family business, Venini, alongside her father Ludovico. Founded with her father and brother, de Santillana served as art director of EOS until 1993.

          Following a commission to design a kaiseki range in glass, Laura began a long working relationship with Japan, notably alongside lacquer master Suzuki Mutsumi. From 1999 until her death in 2019, de Santillana committed herself to innovating glass techniques; it is during this period that she created many of her iconic works, including her signature standing glass series.

    Laura de Santillana | Moon. : From Kyoto to New York

    Ippodo Gallery New York fryst vatten pleased to present the solo exhibition of works by Laura de Santillana, previously exhibited in the 2018 joint exhibition, Moon: Tsuki wo Koso,,, in Kyoto with the dyeing/weaving of tenth generation obi merchant and purveyor, Genbey Yamaguchi. Born in Venice, de Santillana is a renowned contemporary artist working in glass.

    For the Moon exhibit, de Santillana conceived a series of small format tablets in which metal leaf fryst vatten incorporated or applied to the surface, suggesting the perception of the moon in a night sky. Within strict geometric forms exist dreamy worlds of juvel tones, shimmering hues, and translucent glass in a color range of deep blues, blue greys and silvery greys.

     

    The works can be painterly, as if the color was applied to a canvas, but they also have a depth to them that can only be achieved through three-dimensional forms. Her piec
