Venerable Alfred Pampalon, CSsR
Alfred Pampalon was born on November 24, 1867, in Lévis (Quebec), the ninth of twelve children. His father was a builder and contractor, who worked building churches. After attending primary school for two years, Alfred enters the Collège de Lévis, in 1876, where he takes courses in business. Five years later, after an illness, he begins classical studies in order to become a priest. Shortly before his sixth year, in 1885, he contracts pneumonia. They thought he was going to die.
Following his recovery, that was attributed to the intercession of Saint Anne, Alfred sets out on a pilgrimage, by foot, to the shrine of Sainte-Anne-de-Beaupré to give thanks for his healing. Here, on this occasion, he asks to enter the Congregation of the Most Holy Redeemer of which his brother was already a member. Born in Paris in 1895, his aunt, Palmyre Gilles, introduces him to the art of repoussé (metal embossing). At the age of 12, Gilles makes a jewellery box for his mother. In 1926, he participated and distinguished himself in the annual salon organized by the Society of Decorative Artists in Paris.
First World War. Gilles is wounded in his right hand. Convalescing on a Norman farm, he recovers the use of his hand by milking cows.
At the end of the war, rehabilitated, he resumed his artistic activities in conjunction with the pursuit of business administration studies. And took over the import-export business from his father-in-law.
In 1927, he crossed the Atlantic and put his talent at the service of several personalities. In Detroit, he decorated the homes of the Fischer brothers of GM, and Mr. Mendelson of Chrysler.

During his career as an artisan and designer, Gilles created public and private works for The Walt Disney Company, Chrysler, and General Motors.
