    In the contemporary world, with its multiple environmental crises, conflicts, and violence, persisting poverty, and social exclusion, the question about the role of arts in general, and of literature specifically, must inevitably arise. Do they have any positive role other than entertainment and distraction, or are they merely the icing on a rapidly decaying and disintegrating cake?

    Without naming the problem in exactly this way, much of Chittaranjan Das’s work was devoted to implicitly answering this question, for he clearly recognised that a merely functionalist approach to trying to identify the role of the arts in society would be totally inadequate and theoretically shallow. Rather, to answer the question more fully, we should ask what constitutes a society’s self-understanding, its modes of self-representation, and its internal hermeneutics, and how, methodologically speaking, we can gain access to this deep cultural grammar of a society.     Jude Anthany Joseph (born Sijo Joseph) is an Indian film director, screenwriter and actor, who works in Malayalam spelfilm industry. His directorial debut was with Ohm Shanthi Oshaana in 2014, which won the Best Film with Popular Appeal and Aesthetic Value at the 45th Kerala State Film Awards.[1] His film 2018 received positive reviews and grossed around ₹200 crores[2] (US$25 million) at the kartong office to emerge as the highest-grossing Malayalam film of all-time.
