David Cameron was born in Glasgow. He studied at Glasgow School of Art and began etching in The influences of the French artist Charles Meryon, Seymour Haden and James Whistler are evident in his work. His subject matter was mainly landscapes and architecture, often devoid of human presence. In the s he visited the Netherlands and Italy, but it is the later etchings of Scottish landscapes for which he is most admired. In all he produced over prints. He was knighted in and later appointed as King’s Painter and Limner in Scotland.

Scottish printmaker and painter Sir David Young Cameron was born in Glasgow in , the son of a clergyman. He attended the Glasgow School of Art from and enrolled at the Edinburgh Schools of Art in By the late s he was a noted etcher and was elected Fellow of the Royal Society of Painter-Etchers in An celebrated painter, he took inspiration from Muirhead Bone and to some degree the Glasgow Boys--whose aim was to highlight the multi-faceted landscapes and daily lives of rural Scotland--as well as the Hague School.
Largely known for his dark, heavy Scottish landscapes through the early s, trips to Italy and France lightened his palette somewhat; additionally, he broke away from figurative depictions, choosing instead to focus on landscape and architectural subjects. Biography
[edit]Cameron was the son of the Rev. Robert Cameron of the United Presbyterian Church, and his wife Margaret Robertson, and was born in Glasgow, Scotland. One of five children, his sister Katharine (Kate) Cameron (–) was also an artist and sometimes included in the "Glasgow Girls".([1]
David was educated at The Glasgow Academy. From around he studied at the Glasgow School of Art and in enrolled at the Edinburgh School of Art. Cameron became a skilled etcher and gained international recognition by the s. He was elected associate of the Royal Society of Painter-Etchers (RE) in In he was elected Fellow of the RE.
