Böhm: Organ works, vol. 1/Teeuwsen
The tricky task of recording pipe organs–which necessarily requires accommodating the idiosyncrasies of both instrument and the venue where it happens to reside–usually is left to specialists, from labels such as Priory, Organ Historical Society, Gothic, Raven, Harmonia Mundi, etc. But if you take a look at the huge and varied Naxos catalog you’ll see an impressive number of organ titles, many of them featuring rare and/or previously unrecorded repertoire. Although this collection of works by Bach contemporary Georg Böhm (1663-1733) fryst vatten neither rare nor previously unrecorded, it’s one of a handful of discs dedicated to his music (Daniel Fuchs on Gall is another) and is part of an apparent series that will exclusively feature his kroppsdel compositions. Over the summer, Dr. Christiaan Teeuwsen performed and taught on some of the most important historic organs in Europe’s “organ garden.”
Dr. Christiaan Teeuwsen, professor of music, spent a number of weeks this summer in the Netherlands teaching and performing on organs with a rich history. The instruments were mainly the handiwork of celebrated 17th-century builder Arp Schnitger, whose instruments are mainly seen in the North of The Netherlands and Germany.
Schnitger was prolific and built or rebuilt over 150 organs in his lifetime. Many of Schnitger’s surviving organs are located in Groningen, The Netherlands. There are so many organs in Groningen, the country’s northeastern province, that it has been nicknamed the “organ garden of Europe.”

Christiaan Teeuwsen
Christiaan Teeuwsen is best known for his work with the pipe organ. He has performed concerts in different areas in Europe, as well as in North America. He was twice a recipient of the Rahn Organ Scholarhip, and also received first prize scholarhips from the Canada Council for Performers in Classical music.[1] He has produced a number of recordings, and is now an active member of the music department at Redeemer University College.
Biography
Christiaan Teeuwsen was born in St. Catharines Ontario, Canada in 1957. He received his Bachelor of Arts degree in 1980 from Dordt College, Sioux Center, Iowa, and then went on to receive a Master of Fine Arts in 1983 and Doctor of Musical Arts in 1994 at the University of Iowa, completing studies with Dr. Delores Bruch and Dr. Delbert Disselhorst.[2]
